Guest Post from Author Nicole Murphy

Dream of Asarlai, Nicole MurphyI’ll come clean – I’m not a big fan of promoting myself, and writing blogs. What do I say? What?

Weird thing to admit at the beginning of a blog that’s aimed at promoting my work, but then I figure often, it’s worth being honest.

We all of us at some point have to do things that we don’t want to do, and often times they are for the person or the things we love. That party you really aren’t in the mood to attend, but your partner is desperate to go to. That movie that completely sucks, but your best friend wants to see it with you. That book you really don’t want to read, but a writing partner asked for your thoughts and you don’t want to let them down.

For a writer, there’s lots of these circumstances because at all times, the one thing we REALLY want to do is write. We don’t want to take up time promoting our work, or going to events, or being interviewed or whatever. We want the entire world to leave us alone, so we can just get on with it and write.

When you’re facing a situation where you have to do something you really don’t want to do, you’ve got a choice. Either you find the positive in what you have to do and end up enjoying it, or you focus on the negative and you feel bad the entire time you’re at the party/movie/event.

Nicole MurphyWell, I don’t know about you, but I think life is too short for negativity. I like to be a positive person, so I always try to find the positive in a situation. I know that sounds a little Pollyanne-ish but you really can choose how you feel and react to a situation.

This post is an example. I chose to take my feelings about writing blogs, and try to turn them into a positive. Ladle on some truth to make it worthwhile. Reward myself for getting it done – I’m going to jump online as soon as I’ve finished this and buy myself Daniel’s book. And now I’m feeling good that I didn’t keep avoiding writing this, or that I didn’t just blow off something inconsequential. I’m glad I’ve written this post. Gosh, I’m even a little proud of it!

So make yourself smile. Make yourself laugh (it’s amazing how even fake laughing makes you feel better – go on, do it now. Don’t worry about who’s watching, or listening. Just laugh. I just did, and it feels great). Find a way to enjoy what it is you have to do, and then go do it.

You never know what will come of it. I mean, if I hadn’t written this blog, I wouldn’t have found this cute GIF of Mickey Mouse laughing.

Now, I’m off to buy Daniel’s book.
