It’s November which means it’s time for NaNoWriMo. After a couple of months not writing much new (I started a prologue but without the rest of the story set in my head I decided to shelve it for now), I’ve dedicated November to a new work.
So far so good.
Second day in and I’m above target so that’s bonus points for me. Of course, the doubts have made an appearance. I have a basic outline of what’s meant to happen in the story but it’s only the bare bones and I’m discovering the characters as I go, which means that who they are at the beginning won’t be who they are at the end. There have also been a couple of points where I’ve paused to consider if I can pull this idea off.
I haven’t stopped though.
What I keep reminding myself is that this month is all about the word count. Sure, it would be great to have a wonderful, clean draft at the end, written in a way that was, if not perfect, then with a small bit of editing would be. But that’s not the way this works and it’s not the way I work.
Words on page. Quick and really, really dirty.
And whatever you do, don’t stop.
So to hell with doubt and bring on the 50K prize at the end. (Wouldn’t it be nice if there really was a $50,000 prize at the end?)
So who is participating in NaNoWriMo this year?
I’m not participating – November really is an inconvenient time for me 🙂 But good luck – and yes, it would be nice if there was a $50K prize at the end. I’d probably make the time to do it then!!
