If you’re having a Halloween party, it’s important to set the mood. You’ve got your costumes, your decorations, your themed food and drink. But what have you got on the stereo? Of course there’s the perennial favourite Thriller, but how about putting on of these songs on your Halloween playlist.
1. Bad Moon Rising, Creedance Clearwater Revival
I’m sure I first heard this song playing on some Disney Halloween special. It’s got a fun boppy tune that delivers a horrifying vision of the coming apocalypse. Hey, if we’ve got to die, we may as well dance.
2. Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns
I’m really demonstrating my dependence on television here. I first heard this piece of music while watching Jonathan Creek (it was the theme tune). Regardless, I love it and have used it as inspiration while writing a number of times.
3. Late Night Double Feature from Rocky Horror Picture Show
It’s hard to pick a favourite from Rocky Horror Picture Show as I love them all, but I think for Halloween this one has to take the prize. Those lips, those horror movie references. The best thing is it’s at the start of the film so you can just keep watching and listening to the rest.
4. Monster Mash by Bobby Pickett
Another one I remember from Disney. You think of Disney as being pretty tame but they had a lot of horror themes in it. They even had a Sleepy Hollow cartoon which terrified and thrilled me as a kid. Anyway, Monster Mash doesn’t really have anything to do with Disney, but it is a great Halloween song.
5. Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield
This one is better known as the theme from the Exorcist. It just keeps going and going. Good background music to set your spine tingling
