Cape Breton, Canada

I’ve been really lucky to see some amazing places in my 30-something years on this planet. As of this moment I can count 32 countries and a whole lot more cities where I’ve visited – but I’m not done yet.

In my latest gay romance release, The Love Left Behind, pilot Nick Galanos is nearing completion of his mission to visit the 50 countries his mother wanted to see before she turned 50 and scatter her ashes in each place.

I’m not yet near the magical 50, but here are just a few countries on my destination bucket list that I’d love to visit to help get me there.

#1 Canada

I’ve been to Canada before and lived there for two years but the place is so big that you could spend your whole life there and never see all of it. The reasons for a repeat visit: Northern Lights, bears, moose and Vancouver Island. They’re the things I tried to see over two years but always missed out on.

#2 Greenland

It’s cold. It’s isolated. It’s got huskies. Despite living in Canada, getting to Greenland, which is practically next door, was surprisingly difficult (and unsurprisingly expensive). I still want to go there one day though.

#3 Southern Africa

The main reason for me to visit Africa is to see wild animals, whether that’s the Big Five on safari or gorillas in the mist. I’m not particular where I go so it’s anywhere between Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania or Rwanda – the big issue for me being safe as a gay man so that might prove tricky.

#4 Christmas Island

It’s not all that far from where I live in Perth but I’m keen to see the annual crab migration (honestly, in some ways it looks like something out of a nightmare) and timing it right is the hard part. October, November and December are all options.

#5 Easter Island

Bit of a theme here… Easter Island is also isolated, atmospheric and broody. Broody. I’ve got a bit of a thing about islands and considering Easter Island is in the middle of nowhere it ranks high on my overall destination bucket list. And of course it’s got giant heads.

#6 Antarctica

The most southern land mass on the planet, full—FULL, I say!—of penguins and seals and surrounded by icebergs and whales. The crossing from South America to Antarctica by boat is meant to be one of the worst but it’s so worth it! And I’m poised to strike this one off my bucket list in February 2020!

These are just a few of the countries on my bucket list. Which ones are on yours?
