The second week of 50k in 30 days is over which means that the third week is here. I didn’t do as well in the second week as I did in the first. Three days I didn’t write anything. Three of the writing days had totals of about 1500, while the other was only about 600.

Overall, I got up to 14,000 words (which was 7,000 behind target). I’ve partly made up for it in the start of the third week by getting something written but I’m still behind. I’m in Sydney for a few days and my initial idea to use the time to write has been mostly blown out of the water but I did get a few words down to help me along.

No matter though. I figure I am about four chapters from the end which will be about another 10,000 words. I’m sure I can get that written by the end of June.

I’ve found that I’m writing quite blind at these late stages with only a vague impression of what’s meant to happen. This is both terrifying and freeing. Terrifying because not knowing what’s going to happen means I could have already written myself into a corner. Freeing because I’m able to just play with the characters for a bit.

And playing is fun. I wrote a scene the other night that I had no idea was going to be there. I suppose I had briefly thought about something similar way back when I started this book but I was amazed to find it come to the fore at so late a stage. And 2000 words later it’s proved mighty useful.

I already know I’m going to have to do a lot of rewrites and probably three or four big edits to get this story shining. But that’s how I work so I’m going to embrace that and just keep going.

Onward and upward!
